Local Nonprofit Honors an AZ Philanthropist, and Helps Bring Free Healthcare to Thousands

The Tia Foundation is hosting the I Heart Tia Virtual Event to present Tommy Espinoza, President, and CEO of RAZA Development Fund, with the Luminaria Award and raise funds to bring healthcare to under-served regions of Latin America.

In some of the most remote towns in Mexico, the nearest doctors or hospitals are often many hours away on foot. Complications from childbirth, severe trauma, or undiagnosed illnesses can create life-threatening emergencies that are easily preventable. The Tia Foundation is a local Phoenix nonprofit that provides free, life-long healthcare to 463,000 people in underserved communities in rural Mexico at a cost less than $5 a person. Tia has trained 906 Community Health Workers (CHWs) across five states in Mexico since 2006. Each graduating CHW receives many hours of training from a team of Doctors, a textbook, and a robust medical kit that is resupplied indefinitely by their local government. This means that each project is self-sustaining and does not create a dependence on foreign aid. The organization also passes on its community development template to help CHWs address self-identified, regional issues like education or water quality. Despite the emergence of COVID-19, The Tia Foundation is on track to reach its goal of providing free, sustainable healthcare to 1 million people in under-served communities by 2025.

On October 8th at 6:00 PM (PST), the Tia Foundation is hosting the I Heart Tia Virtual Event to honor the President and CEO of the Raza Development Fund, Tommy Espinoza, with the first-ever Tia Luminaria Award for exemplary beacons of community service, altruism, and leadership in Arizona. The event will feature live entertainment, a silent auction, and videos from Tia supporters. Proceeds will benefit the Tia Foundation’s project to bring free healthcare to over 8,000 people in the counties of Mixtlán and Atenguillo in Jalisco, Mexico.

“Those who know Tommy Espinoza know we could not choose a more deserving person to receive this award. His philanthropy and service to the community have made him an exemplary leader, not just in Arizona, but in the entire U.S. and south of the border too. We are very honored that he agreed to receive this award and thank him for his generosity.” – Laura Libman, Founder, and CEO of the Tia Foundation

“This virtual event is especially important to the Tia Foundation because it not only celebrates the fact that we are serving nearly half a million rural farmers in Latin American, but it ushers in a new chapter in our history with the announcement that we plan to have a presence in the U.S. beginning next year. We are excited to begin to serve the needy in our own community and look forward to sharing the unfolding process.” – Laura Libman, Founder, and CEO of the Tia Foundation
